This past week has seen the launch of an innovative new channel for catching up on your reading anywhere and any time, using a very familiar technology: your cellphone.

Only a couple of years ago, the thought of reading a book on a tiny cellphone screen might have seemed ridiculous. But these days, with the advent of mobile applications such as Gmail, Opera Mini and Mxit, the concept seems quite unsurprising. Struik Christian Books are playing their part in the mobile revolution, by offering electronic book downloads at affordable prices, with most titles in the R30-R40 range.

Ever wished you could quickly look up a verse while on the road, at work, or wherever? If you’re the owner of a (reasonably new) cell phone, there’s no reason to ever be stuck without a Bible. Jolon’s ‘Go Bible’ is a fully searchable, bookmarkable mobile Java app which you can download for free and install on your phone without too much hassle.

Here’s how:

1. Pick a translation. The Go Bible site has the King James Version and lots of other languages. Try this page for the modern language (easier to read!) Revised Standard Version, or one in Afrikaans.
2. Download the zip file and uncompress it to a temporary location.
3. Copy the installation files onto your phone, using infra-red, bluetooth or your data cable.
4. Locate the .jar / .jad file using your phone’s file manager and select ‘Install’. That’s it!

I was able to get it working on my Sony Ericsson quite easily. YMMV (your mileage may vary) so if you get stuck, drop a comment and we’ll try help you figure it out.
